ESS-Bilbao seeks to set up a centre of research of excellence under the auspices of the ESS and create a global knowledge community of 2000 researchers by the end of the period (in addition to 4000 users per year). To do this, it is acting on several fronts:
ESS-Bilbao wishes to take advantage of the importance of the installation to secure the scientific credibility and competences of consolidated centres of knowledge of international renown that create a European headquarters or a regional sub-headquarters in its area. In particular, ESS-Bilbao proposes the launch of the European Institute of Neutron Sciences as a common ground for the European scientific community in this field.
Additionally, ESS-Bilbao seeks to consolidate local scientific-technological capabilities in the field of neutron research in the Basque Country and in Spain. To do this, it will promote the development of its own, already existing research centres (biotechnology, biomaterials, nanosciences) and foster a close relationship with local universities.
ESS-Bilbao foresees the setting up in its environment of additional scientific infrastructures and the use of greater synergy with those already in existence.
